We’re touring several U.S.-based battery manufacturing and recycling stars who help form the strong network of BCI member companies. They provide batteries and the services and supplies that are used to create those batteries. They also comprise the vast domestic infrastructure that ensures a reliable energy storage source exists to power the U.S. economy.
Moura Group: Leading Innovation, Sustainability, and Energy in South America
In the heart of Pernambuco State, Brazil, a remarkable story of vision and boldness has been unfolding for the past seven decades. In 1957, visionaries Edson Mororó Moura and Conceição Moura embarked on a journey to transform a region with no industrial tradition into a benchmark in the energy sector. From this vision, Moura Group emerged, now standing as the largest energy storage technology conglomerate in South America. Producing over 11 million batteries annually and employing more than 7,000 people directly, the company is distinguished by its capacity for innovation and its significant impact on the industry.

Energy Leadership
With a portfolio of over 3,000 SKUs, Moura caters to a wide range of applications, from batteries for light and heavy vehicles to energy solutions for telecommunications, data centers, and the energy transition. The company is a key player in the sector, leveraging partnerships with global energy storage research centers. Moura also pioneered the first Brazilian-developed energy storage system technology, created in collaboration with the Edson Mororó Moura Technology Institute (ITEMM).
Innovation at Its Core
Moura goes beyond battery manufacturing by anticipating energy challenges and delivering solutions that combine efficiency and technology. Investments in Research, Development, and Innovation (RD&I) have resulted in products and services that extend beyond energy storage, fostering operational intelligence and sustainability.

“At Moura, innovation is not just about creating something new but also about enhancing what we already do best. Implementing Industry 4.0 concepts and evolving our WCM Moura management program has driven a 12% increase in operational efficiency over the past three years,” says Antonio Júnior, General Director of Acumuladores Moura.
Sustainability as a Core Value
In a world where ESG initiatives are increasingly central, Moura leads the way in sustainability. Its Circular Economy ecosystem, established over 40 years ago, is one of the most robust in the industry, ensuring the reverse logistics of 100% of batteries sold in Brazil. This translates into the recycling of approximately 120,000 tons of batteries annually—accounting for nearly 40% of the sector’s recycling in the country.

To further expand its positive impact, Moura has invested over R$700 million in the construction of a new recycling and metal processing facility. Now operational, this facility is setting new industry standards for sustainability.
“This new plant consolidates our commitment to the green economy, integrating innovation with sustainable production,” highlights Flávio Bruno, Moura’s Director of Metallurgy, Procurement, and Sustainability.
Social Impact and Regional Development
Moura’s impact extends beyond the industrial sector. Through robust social initiatives, the Conceição Moura Institute drives transformation in education, culture, early childhood development, and youth training, benefiting over 30,000 people annually.
The company also plays a crucial role in regional economic growth. In Belo Jardim, where its headquarters is located, the GDP has grown by 120% since the beginning of the century, reflecting the industry’s impact on the local economy. Recent data indicates that the manufacturing sector represents 37.2% of the city’s GDP—a figure comparable to Brazil’s most industrialized states.

Looking to the Future
Moura continues to evolve, expanding its portfolio and modernizing its business model to deliver increasingly integrated energy solutions. With investments in digitalization and operational intelligence, the company optimizes its clients’ energy management, offering consulting services, advanced monitoring, and reverse logistics. In doing so, Moura reinforces its role as a strategic partner in the transition to a more sustainable future.
