Q1 North American transportation battery shipments

The start of 2025 brought mixed results across the battery market, reflecting ongoing shifts in demand and supply dynamics. In the transportation battery segment, total shipments experienced a slight decline of 0.5% compared to Q1 2024. While replacement shipments remained stable compared to Q1 2024, original equipment (OE) shipments declined by 4%, contributing to the overall market dip. Among the various applications, the Marine and RV category saw the strongest growth, with an 18.5% year-over-year increase – outpacing all other transportation-related categories. Conversely, the passenger car battery segment, which remains the largest within the market, saw a 4.1% decrease compared to the same period last year. Notably, AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries reached their highest-ever market share within this category, accounting for 23% of shipments in Q1.

The industrial battery market showed more positive momentum. Industrial truck batteries recorded strong performance, with lead-based motive power batteries increasing by 3.5% quarter-over-quarter. Shipments of lithium-based motive power batteries also rose by 53.6% over the prior quarter, continuing their share of the overall motive power market.

In the industrial stationary segment, shipments increased 4.4% in Q1 2025 compared to Q4 2024. This growth suggests a rebound from the market correction experienced in 2024, following an exceptionally strong 2023.
