Q3 North American transportation battery shipments rebound

The third quarter of 2025 marked a rebound in battery shipments following a dip in Q2, with overall transportation battery shipments rising by 10%. This growth was largely driven by the Passenger Car segment, where OE shipments increased 2% and replacement shipments rose a robust 23.7% quarter over quarter. Strong replacement activity was also observed in Heavy Duty Commercial batteries (19.3%), while categories such as Marine/RV (-15.4%) and Golf Car (-9.7%) saw declines in the replacement category. General Utility batteries experienced the steepest drop overall from last quarter, down 37.8% from Q2, likely reflecting seasonal demand patterns.

Within advanced technology batteries, lithium shipments continued their upward trajectory, growing 39.5% versus the prior quarter. AGM batteries also strengthened their position in the market, showing solid year-to-date growth in Passenger Car (22.6%), Heavy Duty Commercial (14.5%), and Marine/RV (7.6%) applications.

The motive industrial battery market softened in Q3, with lead shipments declining 10.4% compared to Q2. In contrast, lithium motive battery shipments rose by 21.6% quarter over quarter. The railroad segment continued to expand, posting 48% growth quarter over quarter and achieving its highest sales total since 2023.

In the industrial stationary segment, the market cooled modestly, with shipments down 2.6% from Q2. Despite the quarterly decline, stationary battery sales remain 13.2% higher year-to-date in 2025 compared to 2024.
