BCIS-04C (SAE J3012) is a recommended practice for testing start-stop (micro-hybrid) batteries. It covers the testing of lead-acid starting batteries intended to operate under the enhanced rigors demanded by start-stop vehicles that shut off their engines to save fuel and reduce emissions during frequent traffic stops. The document describes measurements of battery capacity, cranking, charge acceptance and life. Tests include specific SAE J537 capacity and cranking tests already in practice for standard starting batteries plus new tests that specifically target start-stop demands. These new tests include procedures for characterizing pulse cranking characteristics in a partially discharged condition, charge acceptance with and without extended stand and loss of performance on extended stand.

Start-stop vehicles have been in existence for a number of years and there have been numerous battery testing documents developed by other testing agencies that are commonly used in the industry. BCIS-04C (SAE J3012) has therefore included selective cited reference tests specifically for the measurements of cycle life and charge acceptance.
