BCI celebrates U.S. battery industry wins on Manufacturing Day 2025

As America celebrates Manufacturing Day 2025, Battery Council International (BCI) proudly highlights a transformative year that has reinforced the battery industry’s position as a cornerstone of U.S. economic strength and national security.

For more than 100 years, BCI has represented battery manufacturers, suppliers and recyclers who power America’s economy. In observance of Manufacturing Day, BCI and its 140+ members are celebrating the energy storage industry’s domestic manufacturing might, including job creation, innovation, and support for critical supply chains.

The +$10 trillion impact of batteries

A recent economic study illustrates the scope of the battery industry’s contribution to American prosperity. The U.S. lead battery industry alone supports 106,050 direct jobs across manufacturing, recycling, transportation and distribution, generating $35 billion in total business output nationwide.

Even more impressive is the battery industry’s total downstream impact: 54+ million jobs related to or reliant on batteries – roughly 1 in every 4 U.S. jobs – with $10+ trillion in battery-related economic output representing 21% of total U.S. economic output.

“The domestic lead battery industry is still thriving after more than 100 years of operation, offering good-paying jobs in rural communities that prove American manufacturing is alive and well,” said Roger Miksad, BCI’s President and Executive Director. Workers in the battery industry earn an average of $81,600 annually, significantly higher than the national average of $72,300, with battery recycling workers averaging $119,700 per year.

Partnerships with policymakers

BCI was proud to support the preservation of Section 45X Advanced Manufacturing Production Credits in the landmark “One Big Beautiful Bill” signed by President Trump this year.

This legislative effort demonstrates the critical nature of energy storage technology and represents a coordinated effort by both the industry, Congress and the Administration to support battery manufacturing that is essential to America’s economic security.

The 45X credits have already catalyzed billions in domestic investment and created thousands of manufacturing jobs.

“This vote sends a powerful message that America is committed to building and maintaining the world’s most advanced battery manufacturing ecosystem,” said Miksad. “These credits don’t just support individual companies — they strengthen our entire domestic supply chain and ensure America remains the global leader in battery innovation.”

Charting the industry’s bright future

BCI partnered with commodity research firm CRU to publish the industry’s most comprehensive market analysis. Key insights reveal continued growth across all battery market segments: automotive sector growth of 3.9% in 2024 with steady expansion projected through 2027, industrial applications expecting 3.0% compound annual growth rate through 2027, and stationary storage projecting 2.8% compound annual growth rate through 2027.

This collaboration provides BCI members with unparalleled market insights while positioning the association as the authoritative voice on battery industry trends. And that trend is clear: battery manufacturing continues to thrive in 2025, and has a bright outlook for the years ahead.

Manufacturing supply chain resilience and innovation

As domestic battery production continues its impressive growth trajectory – roughly doubling since 1990 – BCI is addressing the challenge of maintaining secure supply chains. North America’s remarkable 99% battery recycling rate provides 90% of needed lead materials, demonstrating the industry’s commitment to sustainability and supply chain resilience.

“U.S. lead battery recycling is a tremendous success story, with a proven record of safety and sustainability,” noted Miksad.

“Our industry’s closed-loop process for battery materials provides the model for a resilient domestic supply chain.”

BCI continues to leverage public-private partnerships to drive innovation, including ongoing collaboration with U.S. National Laboratories and Department of Energy research programs. These partnerships exemplify how American manufacturing stays competitive through continuous innovation and technological advancement.

Building tomorrow’s manufacturing workforce

Manufacturing Day highlights the critical need to inspire the next generation of manufacturing workers. The industry’s achievements in the last year are proof  of the tremendous opportunities available in battery manufacturing, and BCI looks forward to welcoming the next generation of leaders and innovators. With average salaries exceeding national benchmarks and a century-plus track record of stability, the battery industry offers rewarding careers that power America’s future.

The domestic battery industry’s success story – from powering everyday vehicles to supporting critical infrastructure and national defense – showcases American manufacturing at its finest. Through innovation, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to quality, BCI and its members continue building the foundation for another century of manufacturing excellence.
