Our American Battery Industry Collectively Powers Roughly 20% of the U.S. Economy

U.S. battery companies have a 125+ year track record of delivering reliable energy storage to our nation. But don’t take that for granted. On National Battery Day 2025, it’s more important than ever to acknowledge the critical role of modern battery companies in supporting the nation’s economy, infrastructure and national security.

Without question, challenges exist. Shifting global policies are putting supply chains at risk. Despite the obstacles, domestic battery manufacturing companies are working tirelessly to meet the essential applications of their customers and the broader American economy.

National Battery Day

Five Reasons to Thank U.S. Battery Companies

The strength and resilience of the domestic battery industry is truly impressive:

  • Batteries are in (almost) everything: Yes, batteries are the building blocks of trending EV technology. But they’re also the foundation for modern telecom and data centers, cars and trucks, forklifts, locomotives, farm equipment, backup generators, and critical infrastructure across the nation. This massive footprint is built on a wide array of sizes, chemistries and formats to ensure the best battery exists for each application. The lineup includes established and reliable lead batteries to emerging technologies, such as flow and sodium-ion batteries.
  • Economic impact: The multifaceted homegrown battery industry is a powerful engine of job creation, thanks to its reach, both directly via manufacturing and distribution facilities, and through related industries. Independent research firm EBP US recently released a report that estimated the U.S. battery industry collectively powers roughly $8.1 trillion worth of domestic industrial economic output annually, or about 20% of the U.S. economy.

  • Deep domestic roots: In 2024, Battery Council International celebrated 100 years of U.S. leadership. Some of our members have been around more than a century, starting as small family-owned businesses that have grown into global leaders.
  • Free from foreign influence (and disruptions): Industry-led collection and recycling networks ensure lead batteries are made in America, by American companies and using American-sourced materials. This circular economy not only creates onshore jobs, but it protects national security interests and critical domestic infrastructure.
  • Continued innovation: On top of the proven safety and reliability of lead batteries over the last century, the U.S. battery industry is investing in lithium, flow and exciting, new emerging battery chemistries. The domestic battery industry is also modernizing and expanding its production capacity, with the goal of ensuring today’s U.S. battery firms continue to be the global leaders of tomorrow.

Onshore Battery Companies Keep America Running

In short: Batteries power many aspects of our lives and are a key building block for the American economy. They are a critical part of supply chains, national infrastructure and U.S. national security.

So let’s celebrate the role of domestically produced batteries on National Battery Day. Take a moment to acknowledge onshore battery companies and their dedicated, hardworking employees who keep America running strong!
